Well behaved fun in the sun

Camping Jan2018

Campers throughout our district got a silver star from director of environmental services and protection, Nick Zaman.

“It was certainly better than previous years,” said Nick. “We put more resource at it than usual, meaning extra patrols and someone on call right throughout the holiday period. We want to encourage people to continue to come here in the future and enjoy all that the Gisborne/Tairawhiti region has to offer.

We didn’t quite reach gold standard as there was still some issues with littering to contend with but on the whole not as bad as previous years.”

Hundreds were spread throughout the region – from Turihaua to Midway, Makorori, Okitu and more.

Council enforcement manager Jim Single said most campers who set up in prohibited areas moved on once spoken to.

Staff patrolled camping areas each morning to keep an eye on things.

“Generally it's an accidental slip up,” says Jim. “We haven’t had a single tourist give us any trouble when asked to move on.”

Just one infringement notice was issued over the busy summer holidays.. and that was to a local.
