About Pouawa Beach

The site we monitor is between the marine reserve and the summer camping sites.

Golden sand and rocky outcrops make this beach popular for swimming, diving and fishing.

Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve is at the northern end of the beach. Marine life is totally protected in this reserve which covers 2450 hectares from Pouawa to the Waimoko River mouth and 3.5kms offshore. It was established in 1999 in partnership with Department of Conservation and Ngāti Konohi.

Pouawa is a popular camping area in summer. For more information on camping
