The Tairawhiti Development Partnership ("TDP") has its origins in the Tairawhiti Development Taskforce. This was established in May 2000 as a result of an initiative by the Mayors of Gisborne and Wairoa. The principal objective was to improve prospects for jobs and businesses in the Tairawhiti region. The TDP was a partnership of the Gisborne and Wairoa District Councils, Te Runanga o Ngati Porou, Te Runanga o Turanganui a Kiwa, and Kahungunu ki te Wairoa with the Ministers for Economic Development and Maori Affairs, Members of Parliament and community and business sector representatives from the Tairawhiti Region.
