The Waste Exchange is a unique service that helps businesses connect their unwanted materials and recyclables with new owners through a web-based forum and free phone forum.  Through the waste exchange businesses can:

  • find alternatives to the land filling of unwanted materials
  • save on disposal costs
  • support community groups and schools by registering re-usable materials

Through the waste exchange everyone can:

  • access re-usable materials
  • access information about local recyclers and regional recycling services
  • reduce rubbish going to landfill

All Waste exchange registrations are part of a community supporting the reduce, re-use and recycle philosophy.

Electronic waste such as computers and TVs can be dropped off at Energy Options in Carnarvon St, there is a charge for these p:0800 151565 for details.  Look out for more opportunities for recycling eWaste.

Compact fluorescent lights and tubes can safely be recycled by Interwater ph:0800 102131 they provide a box for collection for a small charge.

Metal 

  • Gisborne Scrap Metal Recyclers, 265A Grey St - they pay for copper, brass and aluminium. They take most items that are predominantly metal, including appliances such as stoves, metal jugs and toasters.

Oil

Packaging 

Most stores are happy to take back the packaging when you buy electronic items.

Paint

Resene Colourshop, Gladstone Road - recycles cans and pails of old paint. Resene paint is free, other brands have a small charge.  Community groups can apply for free paint, remaining paint gets mixed together and the grey paint is available for graffiti paint-out. Apply for paint online at www.resene.co.nz

Plastic containers and bags

Kerbside recycling collection  takes all the plastic containers used to package food and household cleaners with recycle No. 1-5. Bread and supermarket bags can be bundled together. Other bags, cling-wrap and polystyrene is not recyclable.
