Connecting Makaraka to city wastewater poll results

The majority of Makaraka people do not want to connect to the Gisborne city wastewater system. Feedback was received from 85 of the 174 properties at Makaraka with 66% or 56 properties not supporting reticulation. The feedback was sought in response to a petition signed by 77 residents asking that reticulation of Makaraka be included in Gisborne District Council’s next Ten Year Plan. Taruheru River wall repairs close walkways

Part of the wall along the city side of the Taruheru River is slipping. Work will start on Thursday 16 February to repair it. To ensure public safety barriers will be put up and the riverbank walkway between Lowe Street and Peel Street will be closed while the work is carried out. Read more >>
Fact finding trip to Canada useful

Council’s environmental services manager has returned from a short visit to Canada to assess oil and gas exploration and production activities, including the practice of fracking (fracturing oil bearing rock strata at depth). Read more >>
Should Makaraka connect to the city's wastewater system?

Makaraka residents are being asked to attend a public meeting next week about whether their township should be reticulated.  A petition received last year called for reticulation of Makaraka to be included in Council’s 2012-2022 Ten Year Plan.  An accompanying letter by Makaraka resident Nigel Hope felt that high rainfall in the area was causing unsanitary conditions with toilets that won’t flush and wastewater that won’t drain away.
