Changes to Council's liaison with iwi

Significant changes to the relationship between iwi and Gisborne District Council are on the horizon. The Waitangi Tribunal Historic Claims process is nearing conclusion. One of the terms of the settlement for the Turanga tribes is the formation of a Local Leadership Body (LLB) to provide advice to Council. Ngati Porou who are also nearing settlement will not be part of the LLB but will deal direct with Council. Read more >>
Submission closed on ten year plan

4pm Friday 20 April was the last chance for people to have a say on Council’s plan for the next decade. Consultation on the plan was approved by Council in March for consultation. Since then Mayor Meng Foon, Councillors and staff have attended 26 meetings with community and business groups in the city and townships of our district. Read more >>
Proposal to lease Nelson Park for Hockey turf

An application from the Poverty Bay Hockey Association to lease part of Nelson Park has been received by Gisborne District Council. The Hockey Association has been planning an artificial turf for some time but has run into a number of brick walls. Last year Hockey worked with Council to rank all available parks in Gisborne on their appropriateness. Nelson Park came up as the best bet and Hockey have since had plans drawn up to make the most of the location. “Nelson Park was never our first choice,” says Hockey Association project leader Matt Skuse, “but it is the area the Hockey association fully backs now and is keen to see go ahead.” Read more >>

Net stealers divert rersources away from road works

Orange safety netting, used to keep motorists away from serious slips and drop offs, is being stolen and the result could be fatal. Crews that should be repairing East Coast roads are being diverted back to reinstate the nets. Read more >>
