Management of Wainui Beach to be reviewed

Council is reviewing its Wainui Beach Management Strategy (WBMS). The strategy was written in 2003 in response to concerns about eroding dunes, property protection and increasing use. The review will involve key community stakeholders. Read more >>

Waioeka Gorge will close for short periods

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises that a short section of the Waioeka Gorge at Oponae on State Highway 2 will close for short periods from 30 July – 3 August 2012 to enable the removal of hazardous trees overhanging the highway. Read more >>
Seal pup attack - owners must keep dogs under control

An attack on a seal pup on Waikanae Beach on Thursday 12 July morning by a Husky is another example of dog owners not keeping their pets under control at all times. Council's animal control staff were called to the city beach yesterday morning. Several witnesses reported a husky dog attacking the seal pup and carrying it some distance down the beach. The seal was dead but still warm when animal control staff arrived on the scene. Read more >>
The Guardian - Te Tairawhiti to be unveiled soon

Excavation work to enable the installation of a new piece of public art has started today (Wednesday 11 July). The Guardian – Te Tairāwhiti is to be installed outside Kathmandu in Gladstone Road. It will be sunk into the ground for stability and to give the illusion that it is rising from the earth. Read more >>
