Beach BBQs all fired up

The 2 new electric double burner barbeques installed on the Oneroa cycle and walkway at Midway Beach are ready to use. After the initial trial period there's been some adjustments to ensure the BBQs are safe and operational. “The barbeques are free to use and will add an extra experience for people to enjoy our beachfront,” says community and recreation facilities team leader Garrett Blair. Wastewater treatment plant emergency shutdown

Our city’s wastewater treatment plant is operating at reduced levels. Sewage is still passing through the biological treatment process, this means no solids are being discharged into the bay. The emergency shutdown was due to equipment malfunction and not scheduled.  Read more >>

Changes to gambling venue policy

A review of Council’s Gambling Venue policy will be available for the public to have their say starting on Saturday 26 September. The Gambling Act (2003) & the Racing Act (2003) require the policy be reviewed every three years. “Minor changes have been made since the last review in 2012, to better reflect changes in the Gambling Act and in our current conditions,” says Strategic Planning Manager David Wilson. These small changes include: - criteria saying where TAB and pokie machine venues can set up, or relocate to. - a cap on the number of TAB venues in the district at the current number. The sinking lid clause and decision guidelines remain the same. The approach taken in reviewing the policy is consistent with the approach taken by other local councils around New Zealand. Sewer discharge to city rivers

Due to the heavy rain, late last night contractors opened the discharge valves to release diluted wastewater to the Taruheru, Waimata and Turanganui rivers from the city sewer network. This is to avoid sewer flowing back onto private property. We will notify you when the valves are closed. Read more >>
