Council resolved on 27 October 2011 not to have one or more Maori Wards. This is the report that went to Council.
Electors of the Gisborne District Council may, at any time, demand a poll on the question of whether the district should be divided into one or more Maori wards, (section 19ZB Local Electoral Act 2001).
A valid demand must be:
• Made in writing.
• Signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Gisborne District Council. This will require 1517 elector signatures.
• Delivered to Council by 28 February 2012 (for the outcome of the poll to apply to the 2013 election).
Every person who signs a demand must also set out his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Gisborne District Council.
