Local contractors helping clear slip in Waioeka Gorge
Since the large slip in the Waioeka Gorge came down at 3pm Friday (7 July), the Higgins team in the Bay of Plenty have been working hard to get it cleared.
With site conditions being challenging, heavy rain and further slip material coming down, our local contractor Downer was more than happy to help out. This shows the great working relationships we have with our neighbouring contractors, and what a dynamic team we have here in Gisborne.
To ensure Downer had enough resources to continue work in their own network, where there has been further flood damage, they called on their wider team to help with the effort.
Downer have done a fantastic job supporting and developing the smaller local contracting businesses, so at times like these they’re able to call on them for help, knowing their Health & Safety and quality are managed to a high standard.
CSL have been manning the road closure at the Motu Bridge 24/7. Earthwork Solutions have been in charge of the slip clearing.
Because it’s such a long cart from the slip site to the site where they take the spoil; Earthwork Solutions called on the support of Allbulk Haulage, D B Judd, DG Glenn, McKay Cartage, G&R Storey and Fulton Hogan.
They’re all know how important this road is in ensuring goods are transported in and out of Gisborne, so between them all, they’ve put 9 trucks on the job.
This is to make sure the digger is always busy – as soon as one truck is loaded, the next is ready to go.
A big thanks also to the Wairata coffee caravan in the gorge for providing a place for contractors to park up, and for keeping the crews supplied with hot coffee and food.
