HB Williams Memorial Library

The current library is a great facility that provides a range of services from book lending to a specialised teenager section to computer internet services.  But it's now too small, given that over time the extent of library services has increased and so has demand. 

What we plan to do

Council plans to upgrade and enlarge the HB Williams Memorial Library in Peel Street. The existing building will be extended into the Bright Street car park. Council has allocated $50,000 for scoping and designing the building during 2012/13. Already $1.63million has been put towards the upgrade, thanks to donations from the estates of Stanley Green, Hannah Dunlop and Jessie Iris Jeffreys.

Why it's needed

The library is often overcrowded and how we use the space is changing. Staff struggle to find space for stock, archives and to provide young people with the services they are asking for. We need to improve access for disabled users and there is limited space to hold public meetings, study quietly and for staff to work.

Other options considered

1. Do nothing: If the extension does not go ahead the lack of space and challenges in looking after our young people will grow. In the future it is unlikely the library would meet the needs of our community.

2. Larger expansion: A purpose built library that meets recommended best practice industry guidelines is estimated to cost approximately $9million. Council believes this is unaffordable.

What will it cost?

• Cost - $3.04m
• Council contribution - $1.41m
• External funding - $1.63m
• Construction - beginning 2012/13 and completed 2013/14
