Free desexing for menacing dogs

Free desexing of dogs classified as menacing under the Dog Control Act, is being offered for a limited time.  We'll also offer free microchipping and $1 registration fee for first time registrations for menacing breeds only.

We have government funding to pay to have your dog neutered or spayed by a local vet, free of charge until the end of July or while funds last.

Dog breeds classified as menacing are if it belongs predominantly to one of these breeds: American Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Brazilian Fila, Perro de Presa Canairo, Japanese Tosa. See webpage for more information

The funding is a good opportunity for owners of menacing dogs to have their pets desexed for free before a law change makes desexing mandatory.

By law, Council is also required to seize and impound menacing dogs not compliant with the Act and owners could be fined up to $3,000.

The initiative is part of the Government’s national strategy to reduce the risk and harm of dog attacks.
