Business energy savings

Heating water

There are several very low cost and effective options to reduce your hot water needs, which focus on reducing the temperature of the water, the amount of water used and lost, and the heat waste.

No costs/ low costs options

  • Regularly inspect the water heat pressure relief valve to ensure there is no excessive water overflow.
  • Adjust thermostats so that hot water at the tap is 55°C.
  • Turn the hot water system off if isn't needed for longer than two weeks e.g. over Christmas holidays.
  • Repair any dripping taps; they waste water and energy
  • If your hot water cylinder is warm to touch, install a hot water cylinder wrap and fit lagging on pipes.
  • Choose a hot water system that best suits your business needs.
  • Replace conventional taps with tempered spray taps. This can save 60% of the energy used by a conventional tap for warm water.
  • Reduce demand for hot water. If you have showers in the workplace, install water saving showerheads.

Some investment

  • Install an ‘A’ grade hot water cylinder.
  • Consider heat recory systems to use heat waste of motors for boiling water
  • Solar Hot Water Systems: Solar thermal hot water systems have been available for years, and can in many cases supply most of a building's hot water needs, or supplement for many small businesses with large water-heating needs (for example, restaurants, bars, and dry cleaners).
  • Insulate the hot water pipes between the cylinder and taps.
