Council is required to have a Dog Control Policy for the district under the Dog Control Act 1996.
The aim of the policy is to protect the health and safety of the public whilst ensuring the well-being and welfare of dogs. It recognises that the community believe dogs can play a positive role in society but they expect dog owners to act responsibly.
The Dog Control Bylaw regulates dogs within the Gisborne district to minimise danger, distress and nuisance. It sets out what is required to control dogs in public places and limits the number of dogs that can be kept in different parts of the Gisborne district.
Council is proposing some changes to the current policy and bylaw including limiting the number of dogs in an urban area.
Council would like to know what the public thinks about the changes.
A copy of the draft policy and bylaw is available on our website or from HB Williams Memorial Library and customer services in Fitzherbert Street and Te Puia Springs.
Written submissions must be received before 4pm Friday 24 September 2010.
You can make a submission online.
