Oneroa Walkway

Cycle and Walkway Projects

Oneroa, Kaiti - Wainui, Taruheru

Three projects in the Long Term Plan including Kaiti to Wainui, Taruheru River and the recently completed Oneroa link to Alfred Cox cycle and walkway.

Progress: May 2017 - the Wainui stage 2 link is still on hold pending land acquisition. Council received formal notification that this acquisition process has begun. The link will connect the current Muriel Jones walk and cycleway with the new Urban Cycleway. Project due to be completed mid-2018.
It was agreed at Council in April 2017 that the Taruheru Walk and Cycleway would be put forward for consultation as part of the Long Term Plan 2018-2028. Also agreed to complete the first section from the riverside cycleway to Grey St.
A new multi-party funding agreement for the Urban Cycleway Project (Wainui to CBD) has been issued to NZ Transport Agency for approval. This will outline project responsibilities for both our staff and the Agency.
The Junior Ride Park is progressing the design phase. Staff have agreed to complete the delivery phase of the project on behalf of Wainui Lions, and the project has now been handed over. Target delivery date is for the coming construction season spring/summer 2017.
The Regional Economic Development Plan funding has been allocated to provide a link between the Motu Great Ride and Rere Heartland Trail. A larger regional trails strategy is currently being developed for the wider Tairawhiti region.
