Busking in the Gisborne city centre is generally allowed, provided no nuisance is created and no complaints are received.

Tips for buskers

Buskers are encouraged to occupy the black circles on the footpath in the CBD or private land. Buskers in CBD
You should ask the neighbouring shop owners if you can busk outside their shop.

Tips for trouble-free busking:

  • No amplified music.
  • Keep noise to a reasonable level at all times.  Complaints often occur due to the volume, type of music, or when the appeal to the public is lost.
  • No offensive language or actions.
  • Do not obstruct pedestrians.
  • Avoid busking in the same place for too long, unless you have the permission of the neighbouring shop owners.
  • Do not solicit or canvas for donations.

If you're selling food or merchandise, you need to apply for a hawkers licence.

Complaints about buskers

If council receives a justified complaint, the busker will be asked to stop or move on.

Contact customer service if you wish to make a complaint.
